Landis & Gyr Stiftung Residency
Ruth Erdt works with the medium of photography, installation and text. Since the early 1980s, she has been concerned with what is happening around her and with her identity as a woman; her stance as an artist is feminist. For her pictures, she works with herself as the protagonist, with friends, her children, sometimes also with strangers. She combines black and white and colour, blur and sharpness, as well as several genres of images such as still life or portrait. She compiles changing selections from her constantly growing pool of images: in 2001, around 100 photographs were published as a book entitled The Gang, in 2010 the double projection The Liars. The publication LIAR LIARS appeared in 2019. Ruth composes her images into different narratives up to film and installation. In 2017, a selection of photographs - all analogue and black and white from the 80s and 90s - was published as a book with autobiographical text under the title NICHT ZITTERN.
"Although the artist seems to expose the intimacy of her everyday life as unsparingly as she does lovingly, she abstracts herself and those close to her into figures in a drama that we know from our own experience; she allows us to see the universal human in the private." - Nadine Olonetzky 2018
